  • Lyceum-SSC, Adamson-
    Ateneo in ‘V’ semis

University of St. La Salle (USLS)-Bacolod spoiled University of San Jose-Recoletos’ (USJ-R) bid for a crack at the last semifinal berth as it fashioned out a 25-23, 23-25, 25-11, 25-13 victory Sunday to pave the way for Lyceum’s stint in the next round at the close of the quarterfinal phase in the Shakey’s V-League Season 5 at The Arena in San Juan.

Fighting for pride and honor, the Bacolod spikers took the third and fourth sets behind the power-hitting duo of Patty Orendain and Sheryl Silva as they came out of a sorry second-set setback to win the next two in dominating fashions for the victory.

“We fought for pride. We don’t want to go back to Bacolod on a losing note,” said USLS coach Roger Banzuela. “We played our hearts out there.”

Thus, Lyceum formalized its entry to the semifinals, which starts tomorrow, with the Lady Pirates facing the San Sebastian Lady Stags at 2 p.m., and the Adamson Lady Falcons tangling with the Ateneo Lady Eagles at 4 p.m.

It was a sorry loss indeed for the Lady Jaguars, who had hoped for a win for a shot at the last semis seat against the Lyceum Pirates for the league’s three-of-five incentive rule.

But the Lady Stingers had other things in mind.

After splitting the first two sets, the Lady Stingers stamped their class, with Kay Aplasca joining Orendain and Silva in attacking the Lady Jaguars’ net defense, scoring almost at will en route to the victory in one hour and 41 minutes.

Orendain finished with 24 points, highlighted by 22 kills, while Silva delivered 11 hits and Aplasca accounted for 12 points, including four blocks.

Genie Sabas and guest player Mechell Matuguina combined for 25 points for USJ-R, which also drew a combined 20-point output from Mary Joy Bonita, Cristy Laroga, Julett Marikit and Rachel Singson.

Earlier, St. Benilde closed out with a bang, beating Far Eastern U, 25-20, 25-18, 25-16, for its first and only win in the tournament organized by Sports Vision and backed by by Active White skin-whitening products, Mail and More, ICT Call Center, 100Plus Energy Drink, Mikasa and Accel.

Giza Yumang took care of the St. Benilde’s offense, firing away eight hits, while Anna Maranan underscored the team’s solid defense with four blocks and a 12-point output as the Blazers finally tasted victory after dropping all their games in the double-round eliminations and their first four assignments in the quarters.

Cindy Velasquez tossed in 10 points, while Doreen Sanchez added eight points for the Blazers, who kept the momentum of a superb first-set performance to fashion out the one-hour victory.

“It was a nice win, at least we did not go out with a zero mark,” said St. Benilde coach Edwin Leyva. “Our stint in the Shakey’s V-League was worth it since our main goal was to get enough exposure and experience heading into the NCAA season.”

The Tams, who drew a lone double-digit output from Maica Morada, wound up tied with the Blazers at 1-4.
