    Gretchen’s tirade against
    Maurice, Cojuangcos

I ACTUALLY don’t know how to start this piece. You see, the items here are different from one another but somehow related. One is about reconciliation, while the other one is about making new enemies. One is about controversial talent manager, TV-and-radio host and columnist Lolit Solis, while the other is about the equally—or even more—controversial actress Gretchen Barretto. Both are connected to the infamous Manila Film Festival scandal of 1994, with Lolit “scamming” to have her then-talent Gabby Concepcion as the Best Actor winner, and Gretchen acting as the whistle blower.

Anyway, after much thought, I decided to start with the negative, and end with the positive. It would take another column to describe how I came up with this, so I’ll just spare you the melodrama.

Gretchen Barretto is now part of the K-Text family. You see, K-text is a value-added service of ABS-CBN Interactive where people get daily updates through text from their favorite stars. They just register their name, send certain keywords to 2366 and voilà! They get an MMS or SMS message composed by the celebrities themselves. Whether they’re in a party or in a studio taping for some show, fans can get updated to what’s happening with their favorite personalities.

Gretchen recently sent a K-text message to her subscribers that read something like this:

“I was told about the PDI [Philippine Daily Inquirer] Sunday spread regarding the wedding of the daughter of Tony Cojuangco. Maurice Arcache wrote it. It had photos and had to make me the bida of the writeup. Saying that buti naman daw that I had the delikadesa not to attend. I wasn’t invited to the wedding. I would never force myself into it. I have a lot going for me that I don’t need to dwell into some issue we all know about for the past 14 years....”

And it goes on with another message...

“FYI, Maurice Arcache = May 3 Saturday I was in Bacolod, May 4 Sunday I was in Iloilo. I had my miniconcerts. I am a busy person. Trying to make a go for myself. Living well and earning my own keep. Maurice Arcache feels the need to use me to make that article stand out....You should stay out of your drugs so you could think well and live well....”

    But wait! There’s more!

Nakakapagod na rin talaga what I have to go through with the cojangcos [sic]. I’ve been going through this beating for the past 14 years. Most of the time I just would love to let go. It can’t be a normal life. Maybe it would stop when I let go.”

    Ooohhhhhh....

First of all, she accuses society columnist Maurice Arcache of drug use! And then, she says she’s tired of all what she goes through with a certain powerful political family. And that she’s been going through it for the past 14 years!

Hmmmm....Gretchen Barretto as poor little rich girl? She with the Chanel and Hermes bags at her disposal (I think her cheapest bag is either a Gucci or a Louis Vuitton)… the designer outfits that can fill 10 million closets...the killer shoes that I could only acquire if I would be reincarnated 5 million times?!

Yes, it may be possible. After all, we’re all human.

Speaking of being human, as an old saying goes: To err is human, to forgive is divine. Lolit Solis has officially retracted her tabloid column item in which she claimed to have seen Piolo Pascual and Sam Milby in a hotel poolside acting sweetly, and that when they saw her the two actors scampered to hide.

She says in her official statement, “There’s no factual basis for my article, which came out on October 15, 2007.  I am extremely sorry for dragging the names of Sam and Piolo. Sam, Piolo, I am sorry for the hurt and embarrassment I caused.’”

Everything was amicable during their meeting at the sala of the judge hearing the case. Piolo and Sam forgave Lolit when she personally apologized to them. The settlement ended with Lolit joking with everyone, even with the actors’ manager Johnny Manahan, whom she called “Papa Johnny.”

Well now, Lolit, with what you just did, you’ve unwittingly gained another enemy...because “Papa Johnny” is all mine! Mine!
