FINALLY, they’re the talk of the town again.

On national television, former on- and off-screen sweethearts Jericho Rosales and Heart Evangelista revealed how they’d broken up. At least, from Heart’s side.

Jericho, in an interview on The Buzz with cohost Boy Abunda, said he was surprised with the news about Heart’s announcement on television and in print that they’re not a couple anymore.

Jericho, teary-eyed, said he still loves Heart, and that he’s happy that she has reconciled with her parents. He emphasized that them being apart is just temporary and he will try to work things out.

It can be recalled that Heart lived with Jericho in the entire three years that they were together, though they denied it in public. Her family, especially her father, consistently treated her like an outcast.

“When I called them during Christmas, my father refused to talk to me,” Heart said in an earlier interview. It can also be recalled that her career—and Jericho’s as well—went down the drain since they went public about their relationship.

Heart is now in Dubai shooting a new soap for GMA with Richard Gutierrez, titled Codename: Asero. In a phone interview with Raymond Gutierrez, cohost of GMA’s Showbiz Central, Heart revealed that the main reason of their breakup is a third party. Or make that, third and fourth parties.

The names she mentioned were Carmen Soo, a Malaysian actress-model with whom Jericho recently teamed up in a soap opera shot and to be shown in Malaysia. Another was American actress Briana Evigan, who earlier worked with Jericho in a Hollywood film, titled I Luv U Virus.

Heart used the present-progressive tense “is having” when she revealed the affairs of her former boyfriend. She added, “I can handle anything, even my parents’ refusal to see me. I fought for our relationship. Everybody knew that. But what he did was below-the-belt.”

She pointed out that the breakup happened weeks ago over the phone and not on television. Jericho at the time was in Malaysia doing the soap with Soo. Heart said she told Jericho that she wanted to move on already, which Jericho refused to accept. She added that she has proof of Jericho’s infidelities.

Jericho defended himself by saying that he can’t be having an affair with the two foreign actresses because he loves Heart “very much and truly. How can I, in my life, at this stage...and I look like this, miserable. I don’t think I can do that.”

Reading between the lines, it’s as if he admitted that, at some point, or stage, in his life, he actually had affairs while being publicly involved with someone.

Amid all this, he countered the widespread belief that they broke up to drum up publicity for Heart’s reentry into showbiz—and his rumored repairing with former leading lady Kristine Hermosa.

He also admitted that he knew all along that his and Heart’s popularity suffered because of their living in together. He actually used the word laos (has-been) and apologized to Heart’s parents for that. He said that he remains positive that if they won’t be a couple anymore, at least they could become friends.

“Friendship is worth fighting for,” he told Boy Abunda and the entire nation.

But Heart just brushed off every explanation that Jericho offered. She said in Pilipino, “I don’t think I know him that well. It’s like I’m dealing with a different person. I hope he tells the truth about his affairs and won’t make it appear that he’s the kawawa in our breakup. I have moved on, and I want to start a new chapter in my life.”

As most showbiz scribes would say it with conviction: “’Yun na.”
