FOR
being honest, an immigration officer assigned at the
Ninoy Aquino International Airport (Naia) was commended
by Bureau of Immigration (BI) Commissioner Marcelino
Libanan for refusing a bribe from a Korean passenger who
was later barred from entering the country and sent back
to
South Korea
for being an undesirable alien.
Libanan
described the act of immigration officer Michael Dizon
in rejecting the bribe as an “example of the new culture
of honesty and dedication that has become a measure of
efficiency in public service at the Bureau of
Immigration.”
The BI
chief added: “Dizon gives flesh to the real meaning of
public service at the BI and inspires others in the
bureau even as his act is not an isolated case but the
regular norm at the BI front lines. Still, this will
not be left unnoticed.”
Libanan
also issued an order placing the 40-year-old Korean, Lee
Dong Woon, on the immigration blacklist after receiving
a report on April 27 that the Korean allegedly tried to
bribe Dizon upon his arrival at the Naia 2 Centennial
Terminal.
Dizon
had reported that when he asked Lee about his purpose in
coming here, the Korean said he intended to stay in the
country until February next year because he was
allegedly hired by the Hanjin Corp. to work in ongoing
projects in the Philippines.
Dizon
then asked Lee to produce his work contract, but the
Korean instead took out from his wallet an unspecified
amount of money and offered it to Dizon.
The BI
officer reported the matter to his superior, Ferdinand
Sampol, who issued an exclusion order against the
passenger, which resulted in his return to his port of
origin in
Korea.
