Secretary Ignacio Bunye said on Monday that he is
looking forward to his “homecoming” when he rejoins the
financial sector—albeit as a member of the Monetary
Board—on July 3.
“This is
a homecoming of sorts for me. This is something which I
used to do for six years immediately prior to the Edsa
Revolution. So, I believe, this is something that I will
enjoy going back to. I’ll still be rendering public
service but in a different capacity,” Bunye told Palace
reporters a day after announcing, with clearance from
the President, his new posting.
He said
he had served as press secretary far longer than he had
bargained for, as he was made to understand that he
would only hold the job for six months when he joined
the Arroyo Cabinet in 2002. This stretched to six years,
the longest service of any press secretary after martial
law.
“When I
accepted the position, to be honest, I thought that I
would just be serving for six months. It suddenly became
six years. I believe it’s time to move on and the other
opportunity is something that I would also enjoy doing,”
