    Dennis, Katrina step out
    of their comfort zones

GMA continues to uphold its thrust of providing prime-time quality drama in the afternoon block with the top-rating “Sine Novela,” now celebrating its eighth season with another heart-wrenching blockbuster film classic, Pablo Gomez’s Magdusa Ka.

The movie Magdusa Ka is one of the most notable and well-celebrated movies that garnered numerous awards from various film organizations, including the Film Academy of the Philippines, Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences and Urian in 1986. The movie was directed by multiawarded actor Eddie Garcia and headlined by a strong cast of dramatic actors, including Dina Bonnevie, Christopher de Leon, Dindo Fernando and Nida Blanca.

Beginning May 12, Magdusa Ka promises to keep viewers riveted with its heartbreaking story of love, dreams, sacrifices and change brought to life by today’s hottest artists such as Katrina Halili, Iwa Moto and Dennis Trillo, under the direction of multiawarded director Maryo J. Delos Reyes.

Aside from its compelling story, witness the bold character transformation of Katrina and Dennis in the series. Katrina, who became famous for her sexy villainous parts, will play the lead role of a non-contravida as Christine, the character originally played by Dina Bonnevie in the movie. Dennis, on the other hand, will evolve from a sweet boy-next-door image to a tough, street-smart, playboy character as Rod, portrayed in the film by Christopher de Leon.

Iwa, meanwhile, advances further as the country’s newest wicked female character as Millet, originally played by Pinky Amador in the movie two decades ago.

The story of Pablo Gomez’s Magdusa Ka revolves around the life of Christine (Katrina), a poor young waitress raised with love and care by her mother Toyang (Rita Avila), a laundrywoman played then by the late Nida Blanca. Christine is a loving daughter who dreams that, one day, all their sufferings and sacrifices will end. She is able to endure all the hardships and pain with the help of her boyfriend, Rod (Dennis Trillo), who comforts her. However, unknown to Christine, Rod, a jeepney driver, is unfaithful and a double-crosser. Christine’s colorful days with Rod soon end when Toyang discovers her daughter’s secret relationship with the jeepney driver. Toyang throws Christine out of the house for disobeying her.

Christine is hopeful she will be happy with Rod by her side, but after several days of living together she ends up with more hurts and pains. Christine runs to her rich father for help. In return, Bernardo (Gardo Versoza) asks Christine to live with him in the mansion.

Hoping to live a more convenient life, Christine agrees. In the mansion she meets Bernardo’s scheming wife Olivia (Jackie Lou Blanco) and her daughter Millet (Iwa Moto). The two women will connive and do anything to amass all wealth they have longed for. They will not allow Christine to inherit any of the riches of Bernardo’s family.

Christine’s new life pushes Rod to return to his wealthy father Gerry (Emilio Garcia) and demand what is rightfully his. Rod detests wealthy people because his father once abandoned him and his mother. His resentment worsens when he meets Roland (Gabby Eigenmann), his half-brother who enjoys the wealth he is supposed to be enjoying, as well. But now that Christine is rich, he too must change his lifestyle to prove his love to Christine.

Magdusa Ka airs in GMA’s “Dramarama sa Hapon” programming block.
