Looking fast, standing still. The 100-kph speed limit on the SCTEx seemed never enough for Bimmers.

WEEKENDS are supposed to be fun, and the people behind the much-awaited highway in the land knew just that.

The Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) marked another preinaugural debut of the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEx) with the 94K Weekend held from April 18 to 20 at its Mabalacat entry in Clark, the halfway point of the Philippines’ longest highway.

It was an event for athletes, bikers, cyclists and car enthusiasts who enjoyed the 93.77-km highway. The 94K Weekend hosted a series of activities to highlight the SCTEx experience. A torch relay, which was participated in by VIPs and celebrities, marked the ceremonial opening. “The flame of the torch symbolized the opening for new opportunities in business, leisure and travel alike, as SCTEx provides for a much efficient way of linking Subic, Clark and Tarlac,” said Gen. Robert Gervacio, SCTEx program director and spokesman.

Run of their life. The Pinoy Ultra Runners on the podium at Subic with SCTEx spokesman Gen. Robert Gervacio and publicaffairs manager Leilani Barlongay-Macasaet.

The other highlights of the event were the 10k fun run and the 42k marathon, which proved that the smoothness of SCTEx rivals that of an oval track. For the grand finale, the BCDA, in cooperation with Recreational Outdoor Exchange, hosted the Pinoy Ultra Runners’ “Run for their Life”—a 94K ultramarathon in which 10 high-endurance runners ran through the entire stretch of SCTEx, from  Tarlac to Subic toll gates, for the benefit of cancer patients around the country.

The first to finish was Olive Cortez, who said the ultramarathon at the SCTEx was one great experience. “What made the run something worth indulging in were the smoothness of the road and the view of nature while cruising along the entire stretch,” said Cortez.

Guests had the chance to ride their motorcycles on its well-paved asphalt. Wall-climbers did their stuff on the special three-wall structure erected at the event site in Clark. BMW Philippines and the BCDA teamed up to let thrill seekers pilot ultimate driving machines at the 100-kph speed limit during the 94k drive and 94k ride. They also hosted a car show for four-wheel and two-wheel Bimmers.

Overall, the 94K Weekend was indeed a fun way of making SCTEx synonymous with stress-free and sheer driving pleasure.
