  • Concepcion smelling world-title shot

FILIPINO super-bantamweight campaigner Bernabe Concepcion will see action next month to keep himself busy and ready for a possible shot at the world crown.

According to Concepcion’s manager Aljoe Jaro, they intend to maintain the Virac native’s focus and will plunge back into training within the week.

“We already have a slot for the May 17 Latin Fury card, but it will just be a nontitle fight,” said Jaro in an overseas interview with the BusinessMirror.

Headlining the May 17 card presented by Top Rank Inc. is Mexican superstar Jorge “Travieso” Arce, who will go up against Devid Lookmahanak of Thailand in a nontitle encounter.

The BusinessMirror learned that another hot prospect, Michael Farenas, who is managed by world bantamweight champion Gerry Peñalosa, is preparing for a possible stint in the May 17 event. Farenas is now in Los Angeles along with trainer and Peñalosa’s older brother Jonathan.

In the same interview, Jaro said they are eyeing undefeated International Boxing Federation super-bantamweight champion Steve Molitor (27-0, 10 knockouts) of Canada. Also on their radar is World Boxing Organization champion Daniel Ponce de Leon of Mexico.

Concepcion, 20, scored another win in Mexico by stopping American Torrence Daniels in two rounds Sunday morning (Manila time) at the Plaza de Toros in Queretaro.

Concepcion (25-1-1, 14 knockouts), stopped Daniels (10-4-1, 4 knockouts) with a barrage of punches that prompted referee Ruben Carrion to halt the bout at 2:42 of round two.

Before the stoppage, Concepcion floored Daniels, 33, with a strong right straight to the face to keep his North American Boxing Federation 122-lb crown.

Concepcion has now scored back-to-back wins in Mexico after his 12-round unanimous decision over another American Juan Ruiz in February in Domo de la Feria, Leon, Guanajuato, Mexico.

The Concepcion-Daniels bout was one of the undercards of the “Latin Fury” promotion topbilled by “Son of a Legend” Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., who annihilated erstwhile unbeaten Italian Tobia Giuseppe Loriga in nine rounds.
