THE
Women’s Golf Association of the Philippines (WGAP)
considered amateur stars and US scholars Jayvie Agojo
and Dottie Ardina to the Philippine squad to the Queen
Sirikit Cup, or Asia-Pacific Ladies Invitational Golf
Team Championships in Chiba, Japan, in May.
However,
with school work and golf schedules on full load these
months in the US, Agojo, a student of the University of
Pepperdine and a US National Collegiate Athletic
Association (NCAA) Division I player, and Ardina, an
Ictsi scholar at the
Pendleton Academy,
begged off.
But
Agojo is the sadder of the two. In an e-mail to
Greenside Chip, the five-foot-one lass said that it has
been about three years since she last represented the
country in international events.
“When an
opportunity arises, I immediately inform my school about
it. But it is unfortunate that I can’t join the Queen
Sirikit Cup next month. Hopefully, the next time the
country needs my services, I’ll be free and available,”
Agojo said.
And
because of her hectic schedule, Agojo admitted that her
game has dipped a little. “I’m not hitting the ball the
way I used to as compared to last spring. My coaches and
I are making the necessary adjustments to bring back my
A-game,” she said.
Tagaytay
hosts Asean Tour
THE
Asean Golf Tour, chief rival of the Asian Golf Tour, has
sealed a deal with the Tagaytay Midlands in cool
Tagaytay City as the host venue of its Philippine
Mercedes-Benz Tour, according to PR director Emy Arcilla
of CATS Motors Inc., exclusive distributor of
Mercedes-Benz vehicles in the country.
The
Eagle Ridge Golf and Country Club in Gen. Trias, Cavite,
initially reached an accord with the Asean Golf Tour
but, for still unknown reasons, it fizzled out.
Wack
Wack Golf and Country Club in Mandaluyong City, with its
proximity to the city’s shopping centers and hotels, was
the preferred choice. But that didn’t work out either.
Running
against time, the Asean Golf Tour officials approached
Tagaytay Midlands and finally something concrete was
forged.
“This is
a good development. Now, the Asean Golf Tour and CATS
Motors can buckle down to work for the tournament,”
Arcilla said.
