    Bayan sees 5M subscribers

BAYAN Telecommunications is projecting an explosion in subscriber base for wireless landline as the company plans to roll out the service in several key cities nationwide.

Juan Jose de Jesus, Bayan vice president for marketing, said they are planning to offer wireless landline in Bohol next year to add to existing service connections in Mega Manila, Bicol and Iloilo.

“We are seeing an explosion [of] around 4 million to 5 million subscribers in the next two to three years,” De Jesus told BusinessMirror. At present Bayan has some 150,000 subscribers in this service.

“The logical destination for our expansion is definitely the key cities nationwide,” de Jesus said.

Aside from Cebu, Bayan is eyeing to penetrate Bacolod, Eastern Visayas, Cagayan de Oro City, Butuan City, Gen. Santos City and the Davao region for the service.

“As we go on we will also try to improve on the array of units that we have,” de Jesus said.

The next step would be to introduce mobile phones that carry both landline and GSM SIM (Global System for Mobile communication standard Subscribe Identity Module) packs.

Wireless landline is using CDMA (code division multiple access) technology while most mobile phone units in the market use the European GSM technology.

Abrigo Merin, vice president for Bayan Business, said the company is also laying the groundwork for more business and consumer services including the metro ethernet and bandwidth on demand services.

Merin said bandwidth on demand is important for businesses that see surges in data demand several times in a day.

“The capacity would be there but the payment is based on actual usage,” Merin added.
