TEAM
3*Pi/4 from Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) is this
year’s Microsoft Philippines Imagine Cup champion.
Beating
four other teams, 3*Pi/4 will represent the country this
July in the world finals where they will compete with
winners from other countries.
The team
of Wilhansen Joseph Li, Salvador Reyes Jr. and Rodrick
Tan introduced a software application called Ad Hoc,
designed to give information on different products in
the market.
Through
Ad Hoc, users can compare different brands of similar
products only in terms of price and their impact on the
environment.
In its
sixth year, Microsoft Imagine Cup this time challenges
students from all over the world to use technology,
particularly those developed by Microsoft, to help
create a sustainable environment.
Other
competitors were Team Tibecom, also from Ateneo, that
placed second; and students of De La Salle-College of
St. Benilde, third. The other teams were Team IMI2.0 of Colegio
de San Juan de Letran, and Team Tala comprised of
students from the University of the
Philippines,
Polytechnic University of the Philippines and Philippine
Christian University.
The
judges were Lisa Antonio, executive director of
Philippine Business for the Environment and Abigail
Dumaup of the World Wide Fund for Nature; Johnny Sy,
vice president for information technology of ABS-CBN
Broadcasting Network; Joben Rara, account technology
specialist of Microsoft Philippines; and Elena Austria,
vice president of Gurango Software Corp., a
multinational software company.
For the
worldwide finals, the team is going to improve its Ad
Hoc system. “We have a summer to prepare for it, we’d be
consulting with the judges as well as Microsoft,”
Salvador Reyes Jr. of Team 3*Pi/4 said.
Considered veterans for being second-time participants,
Team 3*Pi/4 placed second in last year’s competition
while a team from De La Salle University ranked first
and represented Philippines in the worldwide finals in
Korea. (C. Mocon and E. Dimaculangan) |
