    World IP Day

On April 26, intellectual-property offices around the globe will celebrate the 8th World IP Day. “On World Intellectual Property Day, we pay tribute to the inventors and artists, great and small, who enrich our existence with the fruits of their innovative thoughts and creative vision,” World Intellectual Property Organization director general Kamil Idris said. He continued: “And we remember why it is that their intellectual-property rights [IPR], the rights that they have earned through their individual and collective talents, deserve our admiration, our protection and our respect.”

The Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IP Philippines) is celebrating World IP Day with a series of activities in April under its copyright and outreach programs. These programs pay tribute to the creators, especially the young artists. One such program is the staging of the art exhibition at our office’s Alab Art Space of A World of Pun, a multimedia-art exhibition of John Ryo Manaluz, Jerold Manalili and Cris Dumlao, senior students at the Asia-Pacific College. A World of Pun serves as a prelude to the 8th World Intellectual Property Day celebration.

A World of Pun, which opened on April 4 at the office’s Alab Art Space, features a collection of 21 art pieces, rendered in both traditional and digital media, which juxtapose signs and symbols with imagery to decode meaning in word play. Guests of honor in the opening night are Prof. Napoleon Abueva, National Artist for Visual Arts; Virgilio Almario, National Artist for Literature; and Dr. Abdulmari Asia Imao, National Artist for Visual Arts.

Another copyright program activity is the art exhibition of Marcelo Quezon, Marcelo Baldomar, Jun Tuplano, Toby Fule, Gemart Ortega, Nick Navarro and Avigail Caranto collectively known as Kulay Cadena (Color Chain). The exhibition entitled Evolution of an Artist: Quest for Identity will have its opening night on April 25 at the Innovation Area with noted visual artist Fernando Cena as guest of honor.

The office is hosting the second Summer Art Workshop for IP Philippines employees and their children after a successful turnout last year. The workshop, to be held on April 24 and 25, has two groups: the young kids’ art workshop for participants aged 10 years old and below, and the adults’ art workshop for IP Philippines employees and their children aged 11 years old and above. Select pieces from the workshop will be included in an exhibition in June, the office’s anniversary month.

The office also inked a partnership with the National Book Development Board for the World Book and Copyright Day on April 23. IP Philippines will conduct a basic copyright seminar to event participants at the Filipinas Heritage Library.

For our outreach-program activities, IP Philippines and BusinessWorld will stage the Best Practices Forum on Intellectual Property Rights on April 25 at the Blue Leaf Events Pavilion in Fort Bonifacio. Office representatives will discuss topics related to IPR protection in trademarks, copyright and trade secrets.

The office will also open the Free IP Clinic to the public on the following dates: April 21, 23 and 25 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Trademark examiners, patent examiners and legal officers of IP Philippines will be on hand to answer inquiries on IP and the application or registration process.

Through these small but meaningful activities for the World IP Day, IP Philippines honors Filipino scientists and inventors, Filipino entrepreneurs and Filipino artists who add color to our lives with their creations.

Outside the Box: PSE: Still should go down some more

ONE month ago, on March 14, the Philippine Stock Exchange index (PSEi) closed at 2904.73. As of this writing, the market closed at 2,904.73. I know that it is just coincidental, but I wrote back then that the market should fall another 10 percent. In fact, I said it needed to fall another 10 percent before there would be a great buying opportunity.
