  • Dell enters consumer market

COMPUTER maker Dell Inc. has launched its new, customizable, consumer-friendly and trendy XPS and Inspiron line notebook and desktop computers—expanding its offerings from office machines to computers for the home and for on-the-go users.

With the launch of these new computers, Dell “officially stamped its arrival in the Philippine consumer market,” Dell Philippines country manager Barry Bunyi said, adding that Dell is now offering an array of vibrantly colored, high-powered laptops and slim, sleek desktops through its retail partners nationwide, giving Filipino consumers easy access to its XPS and Inspiron brands.

In an earlier interview, he had told the BusinessMirror Dell took the step toward servicing consumers as a new challenge to further expand its market, considering in the corporate service area, the company had just about had it “made.”

Bringing its computer offerings out of the office and putting them within reach of home and nonoffice users “is an important initiative for Dell and a great way for us to connect with the Philippine customers we may not have reached in the past,” Bunyi said. “We have had strong success in the corporate segment and the time is right for us to allow the general populace to experience what Dell has to offer.”

Dell’s Inspiron notebooks offer a high degree of personalization with 14-inch and 15.4-inch widescreen screen choices that feature a high-definition display powered by True-Life technology. Consumers are also given a choice of hard drive sizes up to 250 gigabytes (GB). They also come with integrated webcams, dual digital microphones, noise-cancellation ear buds and select systems with Blu-ray disc drives and Wi-fi as well as Dell MediaDirect and Instant Office technology for fast, one-button access to videos, music or photos, calendar and contacts.

A standard integrated eight-in-one media card reader enables easy transfer of content from other digital devices to the Inspiring series notebook and it has four USB ports and IEEE 1394 ports as well. Consumers have a choice of Microsoft Windows Vista Basic or Premium. Starting suggested retail price (SRP), according to Dell’s press statement, is P33,995, inclusive of value added tax, or VAT.

The Inspiring on series laptop PCs come in ruby red, midnight blue, spring green, flamingo pink, jet black, Alpine white, espresso brown, and sunshine yellow in a matte microsatin finish. All Inspiron notebooks feature MediaDirect software with Instant Office, “the fastest one-button instant access utility available, enabling users to look at photos, listen to music or check their calendar in seconds,” Dell said in a press statement.

The Inspiron desktops, on the other hand, “are designed to help customers take control of their digital life,” Bunyi said, adding that these computers offer “impressive flexibility in choice of form factors and configurations. The mini-tower supports expandability, while the slim-tower is 40 percent smaller in size, it does not compromise on performance.”

Starting at an SRP of P31,995, including VAT, all Inspiring on desktops “can be configured with a wide variety of technologies, like robust graphics, widescreen displays and sound systems that easily take on challenging digital entertainment and gaming activities,” Bunyi said.

He said the Inspiron desktops “make great media hubs” and come equipped with “up to 320GB hard drive space, which can be expanded to one terabyte (TB). The Inspiron 530 and 530s desktops feature Pential Dual Core to Quad Core processors.”

The Inspiron desktops come with a range of graphics solutions integrated for “everyday productivity, e-mail and web browsing to high-performance supporting high resolution monitors and dual displays, 3-D gaming, high-definition television,” Bunyi said. It also supports from eight or 10 USB 2.0 ports for the slim-tower and mini-tower models, and has a variety of multimedia options—including a 13-one media card reader, IEEE 1394 and a choice of Microsoft Windows Vista Basic, Premium or Ultimate. The SRP for the Inspiron 530 and 530s are P31,995 and P36,995, inclusive of VAT.

Dell’s XPS M1330 ultramobile notebook computer weighs just under 1.8kg and features an ultra-thin 23.1-millimeter profile without sacrificing power or connectivity. Priced at P84,995, inclusive of VAT, the laptop features include a high definition 13.3-inch display, slot-load optical drive, full-sized keyboard, sophisticated touch-sensitive media buttons and high-definition multimedia interface support.

It comes with nVidia discrete graphics, an integrated fingerprint reader and webcam and dual digital microphones and is powered by Intel Core 2 Duo processors and the nVidia GEFOrce Go 8400 graphics card. It comes in black, red and midnight blue and has its own remote control and Wi-Fi. User security is enhanced with the integrated fingerprint reader.

Excited about giving consumers “the best choices in personal computing, Dell will offer the award-winning XPS M1330 and the Inspiron 1420 laptops; and the slim-build Inspiron 530 and 530s desktops,” Bunye said.

He also said at the launch that Dell offers “flexible customizability” with its new products. “You order the computer you want, then take the next step by telling us what you want in it—customize it to your needs and requirements—and we give you exactly what you ask for down to the color, if you are buying our laptops.”

Speaking at the launch, Dell’s marketing director for the Association of Southeast Asian (Asean) region and emerging consumer group Toru Matsuura said Dell is “making investments to succeed. Our ambition is to provide great technology, great service and great value to customers across all segments; if we do that and do that well, customers will make us number one in the Philippines very soon.”

Matsuura also said, “consumers are becoming increasingly sophisticated in how they buy and use technology and we are confident we can deliver the special Dell experience together with our retail partners.”

Across Asean, Dell products are now available in Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Thailand. The expansion plan will cover Vietnam in the coming months.
