  • DOTC seeks cancellation
    of Tacloban Airport loan

    Reporter

THE Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) has sought the partial cancellation of the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) loan for the Selected Airports (Trunkline) Development Project.

In a letter to the National Economic and Development Authority (Neda), DOTC Secretary Leandro Mendoza asked that the Neda cancel the P634.5-million loan for the Tacloban airport.

Mendoza said the DOTC is set to receive P75 million and P559.5 million in 2007 and 2008, respectively from JBIC for the Taclobal airport project.

This loan, Mendoza said, will no longer be necessary as the DOTC intends to finance the project through its own funds from the recently approved Government Appropriations Act (GAA).

The project aims to improve and upgrade the facilities of the Tacloban Airport to satisfy the operational safety requirements and to effectively cope with the increasing air traffic demand up to year 2015.

The scope of work includes site preparation, shore protection, asphalt overlay of runway, pavements for roads and car parks, construction of new terminal building, control tower and fire station.

The two-storey passenger terminal building will be equipped with two passenger loading bridges, departure and arrival baggage conveyors, one escalator, three elevators, a flight information display system and security equipment.
