  • Kuwait SC upholds death
    sentence of Filipino OFW

    By Estrella Torres

    Reporter

The Kuwaiti Supreme Court has upheld the death sentence by hanging against a Filipino domestic helper for the killing of her seven year old ward in January last year.

Foreign undersecretary for migrant workers affairs Esteban Conejos Jr., said the government will take appropriate 'diplomatic initiatives' to appeal the case of Filipino worker May Vecina who was earlier convicted for the murder of her employer's son and double frustrated murder for the two other children of her employer.

He said besides the murder of her seven year old ward, Vecina was also convicted by a lower Kuwaiti court with frustrated murder for slitting the throat of an 11-year old son and 17-year old daughter of her employer in Kuwait.

"We will take diplomatic initiatives. But right now I don't want to be specific," said Conejos in a late briefing at the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Tuesday. He said the intervention could include an appeal to the Kuwaiti emir to grant pardon to Vecina that could save her from death sentence by hanging.

"We will not give up. We will continue all possible legal means. We will not leave stones unturned," Conejos said.

The 28-year old Filipina domestic worked for six months in Kuwait until she had a conflict with her employer. After the incident, Vecina jumped off from the second floor of her employer's house leaving her injured.

Along with the children, she was also brought to the local hospital.

The DFA estimates that there are around 70,000 Filipinos in Kuwait, mostly working as domestic helps.

At the same time, Conejos said two Filipino workers who just arrived in Dubai to report for work died in a vehicular accident in the oil-rich country.

Conejos said the accident also left two other Filipino workers seriously injured.

"They were picked up from the airport and along the way, they met an accident. Their vehicle turned turtle,” he said.
