It’s
neither too early nor too late to greet the Filipino
people “Happy Easter,” and in so doing, I hope that as
we celebrate Christendom’s observance of the passion of
the Lord, we also reflect on the state of our nation
which is being torn asunder by selfish politicians and
disgruntled elements who eat breakfast, eat lunch and
dinner, scheming and plotting by fair means or foul, to
topple the administration.
They
seem to stop at nothing in order to attain their wicked
designs. Unfortunately for them, people don’t buy their
misplaced intentions.
The
Lenten season should be a good time to contemplate that
Christ died on the cross to save humanity from the
scourge of evil men. Unfortunately, too, there are
people in this country, some of them supposedly leaders
who, perhaps, spend all their waking and even sleeping
hours hallucinating and seeking more ways and mediums by
which to besmirch good names in the administration and
divide our people in their unquenchable thirst for
power.
Anyway,
to all men of goodwill in this country, Happy Easter!

The
slowly unraveling plot of an intricate drama that is
supposed to end with the ousting of the President, a
gambit which was discovered to have been hatched since
early last year and not as spontaneous as the plotters
want us to believe, using half-truths that are like many
lashes to bring down the presidency, is a passion play
so close to the reality zone.
How many
Lozadas and other schemers of doom are behind the call
for crucifixion, supposedly in the name of truth and
transparency, when many witnesses refute their
utterances, saying that they speak the untruth? Is this
a case of the tail wagging the dog? How many ladders of
success must our President build only to be pulled down
by hatred and envy at the end?
Blessed
are those who stand firm behind the shield of reason and
rationality, preserving our democratic way of life that
we all cherish and enjoy.

Many
scoff at the “unity walks” the President has undertaken
with her Cabinet, various political leaders, government
officials and students.
On the
other hand, many also expressed joy in seeing the
embattled chief of state taking purposeful strides with
those who refused to join the noisy chorus of hate and
show the world that the Philippines is still a
functioning state, a working democracy, in the face of
unabashed insults of hecklers and destabilizers.
To us,
it is not only a show of unity but a manifestation of
the representatives of the people and its President’s
united stand against threats to our democracy.

There
appeared, in a number of newspapers, advertorials
featuring pledges of support for the President paid for
by the League of Municipalities, the League of
Governors, resolutions from local governments and even
associations of government sectors that have been silent
on many issues before.
We
appreciate these gestures because these balance the
purely destructive effects of rallies and protests
against the Arroyo administration which continue to
erode the unity of our communities and campuses.
As one
Metro Manila mayor has put it this morning (Sunday) on
radio, the cost of producing these ads is, by far,
merely a token when compared with the stunting of our
economic advances as a result of these protests, which
will send a wrong message to investors.
Sen.
Nene Pimentel, when interviewed on the same radio
station, bewailed the cost of these ads and said that if
government money is used, then these groups can be
committing another crime; in effect, silencing the
voices of those who only wish to see democracy thrive
unhindered in our land.

Lent is
the season of forgiveness, exemplified by Jesus when He
prayed to the Father while dying on the cross to forgive
his tormentors for “they know not what they do.”
Indeed,
let us not follow blindly, but instead let reason lead
us to greater understanding. |
