FOUR
schools are said to be waiting on the wings in the event
Philippine Christian University (PCU) is dropped or
withdraws from the National Collegiate Athletic
Association (NCAA).
PCU is
said to be headed for another year of suspension after
an investigation conducted by the league showed it
switched the identities of not one but five players on
its juniors team two seasons ago.
College of
Saint Benilde’s
Henry Atayde, a member of the NCAA Management Committee
(Mancom) confirmed four schools have indeed signified
their intention to join the league that turns 84 next
year.
He,
however, refused to identify the four schools although
he hinted they are members of the Fr. Martin Cup
tournament.
“We have
received calls from other schools saying that they want
to join,” said Atayde. “But we will still wait for the
result of the meeting between the [NCAA] Policy Board
and Dr. [Oscar] Suarez [PCU president]. Ang sabi ko
lang sa kanila, we are just here if they needed
them.”
The NCA
deferred announcing its decision on PCU until after its
officials have formally informed PCU top brass.
The NCAA
also announced Wednesday that five players from its high
school basketball team were found to have cases of
identity switching.
Mancom
chairman Paul Supan of
Jose
Rizal University,
in a statement, said that the NCAA Policy Board, led by
Vincent Fabella of JRU, has formed a consensus but said
that they will only announce it in public after talking
with PCU officials.
PCU did
not object to the league’s findings and only said that
they are asking for “mercy” and “understanding.” |
