Santo Tomas U (UST) and University of the East (UE) successfully defended its titles in the girls’ and boys’ division of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 70 juniors volleyball tournament.

The Lady Tiger Cubs beat their UE counterparts, 25-22, 25-16, 25-20, while the Junior Pages defeated De La Salle-Zobel, 25-19, 25-18, 25-16, last February 16 to sweep their respective elimination round.

UST teammates Alyssa Valdez was named Most Valuable Player (MVP), while Charisma Jelly Buan took the Rookie of the Year in the girls division.

Michael Reyes of UE, on the other hand, was adjudged the boys MVP. Teammate Kim Reginald Relcopan was awarded Rookie of the Year.

In men’s volleyball, the two finalists in the UAAP men’s volleyball tournament grabbed most of the individual awards in a ceremony held Wednesday at The Arena in San Juan.

Edjet Mabbayad, an explosive scorer for FEU, as expected, won the Best Scorer trophy along with the Best Spiker. His setter, Jessie Lopez, was adjudged as the Best Setter, while Francisco de la Cruz was named the Best Receiver.

On the other side of the fence, UST took three awards as Raykarl Dimaculangan went home with the Best Server award and Charles Glendon Reyes was named the Best Libero. Jason Ramos won the Rookie of the Year award.

Chris Macasaet of De La Salle won the Best Blocker award.

FEU and UST will figure in a win-or-go-home Game Three for the men’s title on Sunday, 4 p.m. The women’s final between FEU and Adamson will go at it for the title at 2 p.m. at the Arena.

The Most Valuable Player award will be given to the player on the winning team.

In baseball, Adamson seeks for the title via sweep today (Friday) against defending champion UST at the Rizal Ballpark. Game time is at 9 a.m.
