    Edu keeps the passion going

EDU MANZANO is perhaps one of the busiest TV personalities today, hosting ABS-CBN’s “Pilipinas Game Ka Na Ba?”, “1vs100” and “Umagang Kay Ganda.”

It’s not as if Edu is just starting in his career, of course. He was already well-established as a matinee idol and talk-show host in the ’80s, going on to become the president of the Kapisanan ng mga Artista sa Pelikulang Pilipino, the local actors’ guild, in 1995. Currently, he is the chairman of the Optical Media Board.

Indeed, Edu already has numerous accomplishments under his belt. Yet, at 52, he not only remains very active but, in fact, is also enjoying a career high that many in show business at this age have never reached.

Recently, he revived the ’70s song “Papaya” and turned it into a dance craze. The song is on his first CD, titled The World’s Greatest Dance Steps, which has reached double-platinum status. He remains active in judo and all-terrain-vehicle racing. So one can’t help but marvel and ask: “How does he do it—and look so young doing it?!?” Edu himself gives us the answer.

Edu, you’re pretty much everywhere nowadays! TV shows, guestings, and I heard that you’re also into ATVs and martial arts. How do you find the time?

I always make time to try out new things. And to keep my body in shape. No matter how busy I am, I always like to explore what I can still do.

How did you get into these hobbies of yours? Like martial arts?

I started when I was still young. I was nine years old then. In 1978 I even became captain of the De La Salle University Judo Team. It was also that time I reached the fourth Dan Black Belt. I also eventually became the executive vice president of the Philippine Amateur Judo Association. I like the discipline involved in martial arts. It’s also a great way to keep in shape.

    How about ATVs?

I was already doing small bikes before until I graduated toying with big bikes. What I like from them is that I get an energy rush....It swells my chest and it makes me smile even more. Riding bikes always makes me feel free, that’s why I like riding ATVs and motorcycles.

How long have you been riding ATVs?

Well, motorcycles since I was 16 years old....You do the math! (Laughs)

Good thing you maintained those hobbies.

It’s very important that no matter how old I am, I always move and exercise. I have a healthy diet. I take the proper vitamins and supplements that allow me to engage in any kind of physical activity that I like.

What’s your secret in keeping yourself looking and feeling young?

It’s my lifestyle, I guess. Many attribute it to the sports and hobbies we just discussed. I always tell myself to push myself to the limit. Don’t allow yourself to be limited by your age. As they say, age is only a state of mind and for it not to hinder you, you have to eat healthy, exercise and take the right supplement.

I think this is the cue where you promote your new endorsement...

(Laughs) I really take Havitall, a food supplement that allows cell regeneration. Because as we mature, the cell-regeneration process naturally slows down.

So it’s important to also take multivitamin supplements that help enhance this, so my old cells are constantly replaced with new ones and I’m literally new inside.

OK, I’ll give you that. I mean, I still can’t believe you’re 52. You don’t look like it.

It’s also the attitude, eh. Because it’s not how old you are, but how young you feel inside. So never lose your passion and enthusiasm. Always smile and have fun. And always be ready for what’s next.

    These Foolish Things

IT is 2007. It’s a bright, temperate February day—summertime in Australia—and a group of professional divers adjust their equipment for the day’s dive. It’s a routine they know well for a job that is anything but monotonous. Leading them is actor Matthew McConaughey, fully suited up in diving gear for his role as Ben “Finn” Finnegan in Warner Bros. Pictures’ forthcoming romantic-comedy adventure “Fool’s Gold.”
