'Self-serving' of GMA to blunt future Edsa revolts

THE only son of the first post-Edsa government on Monday assailed President Arroyo’s remarks that the world would no longer bear another Filipino revolution.

Tarlac Rep. Benigno Aquino III, son of former President Corazon Aquino, called as “self-serving” Arroyo’s statement at the 21st Edsa anniversary on Sunday, that there should not be another Edsa as the international community will not tolerate another such uprising.

“The world will always respect a people that stands for what is right. Let us not be deceived by her claims,” said Aquino, whose mother supported then Vice President Arroyo when she was first catapulted to the presidency in January 2001 on the crest of massive demonstrations against then-President Joseph Estrada, culminating in the controversial Edsa 2.

Mrs. Aquino, wife of martyred senator Benigno Jr., became president in 1986 after a million people massed up on Edsa to reject the suspect results of the 1986 snap elections.

Noynoy Aquino, who is running for the Senate under the banner of the Genuine Opposition, said that the President’s address on the occasion of the 21st celebration of the Edsa revolution on Sunday was meant to instill doubts and fear among Filipinos.

It was issued, according to him, to make the Filipinos “just accept her presidency despite questions regarding the legitimacy of her government.”

Leading the celebration of the people power revolt, Arroyo said, “The world embraced Edsa in 1986. In 2001, the world tolerated another Edsa. The world, however, will not forgive another Edsa, but instead will condemn the Philippines as a country whose political system is hopelessly unstable and the Filipinos as the finest people but who always shoot themselves in the foot.”

Meanwhile, progressive party-list group Anakpawis has supported the bid of the Genuine Opposition (GO) to be declared as the dominant opposition party by the Commission on Elections.

Anakpawis party-list Rep. Rafael Mariano said that it would be a mockery of the 2007 elections if the administration party, Kampi, or the Nationalist People’s Coalition, would be declared by the poll body as the dominant opposition and not the GO.

A political party declared by the Comelec as the dominant opposition party gets the privilege of securing a copy of election returns.
