MERRY DE JESUS made league MVP Cloiene Muyco look hapless from the mound, hammering the game-winning home run as University of the Philippines (UP) continued to shock Adamson U, 3-2, in Game One of the UAAP Season 69 women’s softball finals.

De Jesus slammed the homer with two balls, two strikes and two outs and the score tied at 2-2 at the bottom seventh inning.

Without hesitation, the 18-year-old Lady Maroon caught the back-to-back UAAP MVP Muyco’s sinker for the winner that pushed UP closer to its sixth league title and the first since 2001.

The Lady Maroons go for the crown in the race-to-two series at 10 a.m. Saturday also at the Rosario Sports Complex diamond.

The Lady Maroons have already defeated the Lady Falcons—who are seeking their third consecutive and eighth crown overall—during the eliminations, 4-3, in extra innings.

Earlier yesterday, University of Santo Tomas bagged third place at the expense of University of the East, 13-3.

The UAAP board, meantime, turned down Ateneo’s appeal regarding its baseball player, Michael Justine Zialcita, who failed to comply with league rules on the completion of requirements for his citizenship.

Zialcita, regardless of his citizenship, could play in the league provided he submit his papers on time. He didn’t, prompting the league to forfeit all of Ateneo’s wins in the eliminations that shoved them out of the Final Four.

With Ateneo out, National U got the No. 4 spot in the semifinals and will face No. 1 Adamson at noon today at the Rizal Memorial diamond. The other semifinal at 9 a.m. pits No. 2 UP against No. 3 UST.

In badminton over the weekend at the Club 650 in Libis, defending champion Far Eastern University swept UE, Ateneo and Adamson to set the pace in the men’s division. UST and UP followed suit with 2-1 records, while Ateneo and UE were next with 2-2 apiece. NU was 0-2 and Adamson 0-4.

The Lady Tamaraws were also overpowering in the women’s side with their rout of the UE ladies. They shared the early lead with the Lady Maroons, who thrashed the Lady Eagles, 4-1.
