  • Far Eastern U in finals, UST isn’t
    By Reuben Terrado
    Correspondent

FAR Eastern University (FEU) sent last year’s champion University of Santo Tomas (UST) out of the Season 70 women’s volleyball finals picture of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) with a 25-19, 25-19, 15-25, 21-25, 15-9, victory Wednesday at The Arena in San Juan.

Thus, the Lady Tamaraws will be figuring in the championship battle against Adamson University, which foiled Ateneo’s bid, 25-19, 26-24, 25-16, in the other semifinal match Wednesday.

Michelle Segodine scored a game-high 16 points, while Rissa Laguilles and Angela Benting chipped in 13 and 11 points for the top-seeded Lady Falcons, who are searching for their first volleyball title in the UAAP.

The best Adamson could register in women’s volleyball was a runner-up finish to De La Salle in 2005.

The women’s best-of-three championship series start on Sunday at 2 p.m. also at The Arena in San Juan to be followed by the men’s best-of-three series between FEU and UST at 4 p.m.

Rookie Shaira Gonzalez paced the Lady Tamaraws with 21 points, including crucial placement shots in the last set.

After the Tigresses tied it up at 6-6 in the last set, Gonzales clustered three of FEU’s next four points before Daquis finished off the game with a kill.

FEU coach Ernesto Pamiliar’s instructions was simple—maintain focus—after the Tamaraws squandered two sets that forced the deciding fifth set.

Sabi ko dumiskarte lang sila at hindi makipagsabayan ng lakas sa palo,” said Pamiliar, who took over FEU’s women’s team just this season after handling the men’s team for several years.

The Lady Tamaraws, who are 4-0 against the Tigresses this season, finished runner-up to the Tigresses last year.

Rachelle Daquis finished with 18 points for the Lady Tamaraws, while Macaila Morada and Anna Abanto had 14 each.

FEU led 7-5 in the third, but UST mustered seven straight points courtesy of Ma. Angeli Tabaquero for a 25-15 win.

Graduating UST players Venus Bernal and Mary Jean Balse had 24 and 16 points, respectively. Tabaquero had 20.

    Ateneo vs FEU in football

THE Season 70 football tournament comes down to one final game for the championship Thursday at the Ateneo Field.

Ateneo and FEU square off for one last time this season in the men’s final at 2 p.m., while De La Salle and also FEU clash in the women’s final at 10 in the morning.

The Blue Eagles and the Lady Archers both forced deciding matches after defeating their rivals last Sunday, thus setting up the winner-take-all title game.

Bucked by the ejection of its coach Ompong Merida on Sunday, Ateneo beat FEU, 2-0. De La Salle, on the other hand, defeated FEU, 3-2, via penalty shootout.

Nabuhayan sila nu’ng na-eject si coach. I think all they have to do is play more than their maximum level and step up,” said Ateneo assistant coach Roberto Manlulo.

De La Salle coach Hans Smit said that his girls will definitely go all-out Thursday.

“There is a certain tradition that La Salle has to keep up. But whether we win or lose, La Salle should be proud of these girls. And they will definitely go all-out in the final game,” said Smit.

Meanwhile, De La Salle-Zobel beat Ateneo, 1-0, Saturday to capture the juniors title—a demonstration event—via a six-game sweep of the eliminations.
