Far
Eastern U (FEU) came away with favorable results that
assured the Tamaraws the No. 1 seed in two sports in
Season 70 of the University Athletic Association of the
Philippines.
FEU beat
Santo Tomas U (UST), 25-18, 25-21, 25-18, Wednesday at
the Blue Eagle Gym to seal the top ranking in men’s
volleyball. Then the Tamaraws forced Ateneo to a 1-1
draw and used a higher-goal difference to take the No. 1
seed in men’s football Thursday at the Ateneo Field.
In men’s
volleyball, the defending champion Tamaraws seem to have
the Tigers’ number as of late. It was FEU that also
foiled UST’s bid for an elimination-round sweep with a
quick three-set victory.
The
semifinals, which will be held Sunday at The Arena in
San Juan, pit UST and Adamson at 10 a.m. and FEU and
University of the Philippines at 4 p.m.
Sandwiched in between is the
2 p.m. game between FEU and Adamson that will decide which school
will get the women’s top seed.
In men’s
football, Glester Sobremisana’s goal in the 58th minute
from right flank inside the penalty box forced the 1-1
tie that was enough to give FEU the twice-to-beat
advantage in the finals.
The
tournament format has done away with the semifinals,
meaning FEU and Ateneo fight directly for the
championship Sunday. Thus, the Tamaraws need only to
beat the Eagles in their 2 p.m. face-off at the Ateneo
Field to capture the championship.
The FEU
women’s team, which also coasted to the championship
series, face storied De La Salle at
10 a.m. The Lady Tams also own the twice-to-beat incentive.
“I think
we are an experienced team pero tactically,
mas organized sila [Ateneo],” said coach
Rodolfo Alicante, about his FEU side matching up against
Ateneo.
In
baseball, defending champion UST routed UP, 14-9, at the
end of the elimination round Thursday at the Rizal
Ballpark.
The
Tigers racked up five runs in the second inning anchored
on a two-run triple by Al-den Lozada. They also
scattered 23 hits in the lopsided victory, top-ranked
UST’s ninth in 10 games.
UST,
which has a twice-to-beat incentive, faces fourth seed
National U in the main game on Sunday at the Rizal
Ballpark after the Adamson-UP contest at 9 a.m.
Adamson
and UP, tied with 7-3 records, dispute the No. 2 seed in
the one-game playoff. Adamson gained the playoff after
beating Ateneo, 8-3.
In men’s
tennis, UST has an elimination-round sweep in its mind
when action resumes today at the
Rizal Tennis Center.
The
Tigers face Ateneo today and De La Salle on Sunday in
their quest to finish the preliminaries with an 8-0
record. Both games are at noon.
A sweep
gives UST a twice-to-beat advantage, otherwise a
best-of-three finals ensues.
In the
women’s side, UST tries to fortify its No. 1 spot
against Ateneo on Sunday at 9 a.m.
Standings—(men) UST 6-0, De La Salle 5-1, UP 3-3, Ateneo
1-5, UE 1-5; (women) UST 4-1, Ateneo 3-2, UP 2-3, De La
Salle 1-5. |
