THANK
God Valentine’s Day is over. It’s one of those days I
dread as it always reminds me how corny people can get.
Yup, I’m
cynical about Valentine’s Day because, as they say in
the movies, “it’s just a holiday invented by Hallmark to
sell their greeting cards.” Most of the time I think
this is true. Because Valentine’s Day is supposedly the
day of St. Valentine. I’m assuming that since he’s a
saint, he has done a lot of good things—so shouldn’t it
be this sense of altruism that we ought to celebrate
during Valentine’s?
Anyway,
remember when we were young and we would sign all these
slum books for our neighbours and classmates? The
questions there ranged from seemingly shallow (“What’s
your favorite color?”) to the occasionally profound (uhm,
“Who is your greatest love?”). But of course, everyone
remembers the inevitable “What is love?” question. I
remember what I answered in one such slum book: “Love is
a mystery...full of mysteries!” I don’t know where I
picked that up. I think I copied it from my corny
classmate who answered the entry before me.
The slum
book phenomenon wasn’t exclusive to gays like me back in
the ’80s. I’m quite sure that a number of show biz
celebrities have answered one or two in their lifetime.
Now I know their answers would be different now,
since—presumably—they’re more mature and more
experienced with love, so I asked a few of them to
answer the question: “What is love?”
Here are
their answers:
Mariel
Rodriguez:
1
Corinthians 13:4-8 Love is patient, love is kind. It
does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is
not rude, it is not self-seeking. It is not easily
angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not
delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always
protects, always trusts, always hopes, always
perseveres. Love never fails.
Drew
Arellano:
Love is
everything it’s cracked up to be. That’s why people want
to feel it. It really is worth fighting for, risking
everything for. The trouble is, if you don’t risk
everything, you risk even more.
Diether
Ocampo:
Love conquers all fears. It never fails and it is always
forgiving.
Marc
Abaya:
Love is
something that brings out the best in all of us.
Francis
M:
Love is the only infinite presence in this finite world.
Love in its purest form is unconditional.
Rufa Mae
Quinto:
True love is God. Love is sweet and sour…
Cassandra Ponti:
Love is
a gift. When you are given this gift, appreciate it. If
you haven’t received it yet, don’t be in a hurry. God is
still wrapping it for you.
Enchong
Dee:
Love is
something that you will cherish and learn. However, it’s
risky and vague for most of the time.
JC de
Vera:
Love is
really blind! [Laughs] This is based on my own
experience.
Erik
Santos:
Love is the greatest thing you can experience in this
lifetime. I believe that love can create miracles.
Joaqui
Mendoza:
Whatever
kind of love it is, the simplest way to know if you’re
in love is when you put that person ahead of your own
priorities. When sacrificing starts feeling good.
Pokwang:
For me,
the real meaning of love is the love from God and from
your own family.
Chris
Gutierrez:
Love is unconditional. It is shared by two people who
trust each other.
Valeen
Montenegro: I can sum it
up with this quote: “I love you and that’s all that
matters. I’ve taken risks, didn’t let go when everything
was all wrong but I cannot thank you enough for coming
back to me. You have given me life again. Happiness can
overshadow anything that comes in my way. I love you and
that’s all that matters.”
Krista
Valle:
Love is
like a little kid playing hide and seek. It only comes
when you’re not looking for it. Little details are often
exaggerated when you’re in love. Love is never going to
be perfect with all the things going around. Love will
only be perfect when we return to our true form.
Jon
Avila:
Love is a friendship set on fire. |
