    UAAP Roundup

    Fifth girls’ volleyball tiara

UNIVERSITY of the East (UE) stalled a bit before overpowering University of Santo Tomas (UST), 25-18, 25-19, 18-25, 25-15, to capture its fifth title in the girls division of Season 69 UAAP high-school volleyball at the UE Gym over the weekend.

Giza Umang fired kills at will as UE seized the first two sets, but slacked off in the third, allowing the Lady Cubs to recover. But the UE girls got their acts together in the next, imposing their strength to derail their foes’ furious rally and sweep the best-of-three finals showdown.

The Lady Pages posted a masterful 27-25, 25-22, 25-17 beating of UST in Game One of the race-to-two finals series last Saturday.

Umang was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, while UST’s Alysa Valdez was awarded Rookie of the Year.

In the boys’ division, UST gave UE little room to operate in a quick, 25-13, 25-20, 25-22 victory, pushing the series to a winner-take-all Game Three on Friday.

The Cubs’ second win over the Pages in the tournament enabled them to bounce back from a 14-25, 25-22, 23-25, 26-28 loss in Game One. (Zenaida Dadacay)

    Warriors break drought

FLASHING tip-top form in the second half, University of the East (UE) ran down Far Eastern University (FEU), 2-1, to finally break into the win column in the Season 69 UAAP football at the Blue Eagle field.

The Warriors scored twice in the last 20 minutes, including eight minutes of injury time, to clinch their first win in seven matches.

FEU, which absorbed its second loss, slid to second place with a 4-1-2 record.

After Raymundo Buen struckin the 37th minute for FEU, Jazel Lagonio opened scoring for UE in the 78th before Gringo Bravo knocked home the winner in the 98th.

In the other men’s game, University of Santo Tomas and Ateneo played to a scoreless draw. The Tigers still lead the field with a 5-2-1 card, while the Eagles dropped to third at 1-3-3.

On the distaff side, FEU scored in the first minute then smothered a hapless UST side with its defense, 1-0, to grab a share of the lead.

The Lady Tamaraws’ second win in five games, courtesy of Rochelle Latap’s lone goal, enabled them to tie Santo Tomas on top with identical 2-2-1 cards.

University of the Philippines made it a three-way tie on top after it squeaking past Ateneo, 2-1, in the other women’s game.

Eliza Benitez and Betty Lina rolled in a goal each in the 37th and 51st minutes, respectively, to help the Fighting Maroons tie Far Eastern and UST.

The Blue Eagles’ Pamela Bravo found the goal in the 81st but Ateneo failed to produce an equalizer. (Zenaida Dadacay)

    FEU spikers in finals

FAR Eeatern University (FEU) scored easy wins over the weekend to barge into the finals of the men’s and women’s divisions in UAAP Season 69 volleyball at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.

Packing their shots with power, the FEU Tamaraws blazed past the National University Bulldogs, 25-20, 25-16, 25-21, in the semifinals to advance to the men’s championship round. The Tamaraws’ third win against the Bulldogs this tournament boosted their bid for back-to-back titles.

University of Santo Tomas (UST) played the spoiler’s role in the other men’s semifinal, hacking out a thrilling 25-16, 23-25, 25-19, 25-23 victory over University of the Philippines (UP) to force a playoff for the second finals berth.

The UP Fighting Maroons, who have a twice-to-beat advantage over UST, meet the Tigers in the deciding game today at the Blue Eagle Gym.

On the women’s side, FEU left nothing to chance as it clobbered University of the East, 25-9, 25-18, 25-19 to enter the finals.

Adamson University, meanwhile, showed it’s not ready to give up the fight, smothering UST, 25-18, 25-19, 23-25, 25-23, in the other women’s game, leaving it a win shy of clinching a finals seat.

The Lady Falcons need to beat the Tigresses anew to face FEU in the championship round. (Zenaida Dadacay)
