MASTER Joseph Chau Kam Shing(Top left), resident geomancer of the Mandarin Oriental Manila. THE Vivacious(Top right) Prince of Wealth. Feng shui cure(above). A brass gong placed beside the entrance door is one of the cures for a main door facing the “Disaster Star.”

IN the Year of the Earth Rat, what lucky charms can we put in our house?

Say, for the living room, bedroom, kitchen, garden, garage...and so on?

To know what kind of lucky charms to put inside the house, it is important to check the direction of the main entrance door, the bedroom (in relation to the entire house), the bed headboard and the bedroom entrance door.

For this year, the lucky directions are the East, Southeast and Northeast. Therefore, to invite more luck into the house, it is good to motivate and enhance the rooms that fall in these areas of the house. If, for example, the living room or the main entrance door is situated in the East direction/location of the house where the “Wealth Star” is located for the year, then motivate this direction by putting a Prince of Wealth to bring more money luck into the house.

Conversely, the unlucky directions of the year are South, Northwest and West. Therefore, to ensure that the house is not affected by the unlucky directions of the year, especially if the main entrance door, bedroom (in relation to the whole house) and bed headboard lie in these unlucky locations, people should put the appropriate feng shui cure for these directions. Each direction will have a different feng shui cure.  But, for example, if their main door is facing South, where the “Disaster Star” of the year is located, then put a feng shui Brass Gong beside the entrance door.

A common mistake in a lot of houses we see is having windchimes and fake fortune plants (bamboo).

If we’re going to redecorate our house, what color or type of furniture can you suggest to attract positive vibes in the Rat Year?

Each person has his own birthday, therefore, when deciding on what lucky colors and type of furniture he/she should get (be it wood or metal, etc.), he/she has to check with a qualified feng shui consultant to find out what the appropriate colors are for him/her. These appropriate lucky colors (like his/her birthday) will never change regardless of the year.

For those planning to build a house, are there key considerations they should bear in mind, like what direction—east, west—should the main door face? The back door?

To find out whether a lot is lucky to build a house on, there are a lot of factors to consider. One is what direction the lot is facing. Second, what year the house will be built and, third, what are the birthdates of the people who will be living in the house. Only with this information can one make an accurate recommendation of where the main door should face, where the bedrooms, kitchen, etc., should be located.

This is just a trivia question: For homeowners, what would happen if they kill the rats in their homes?  Or the farmers killing wild rats eating rice grains in the field? Will it bring bad luck? Should we get rid of mouse trap and poison for a while since it’s their year?

There is no problem if the if homeowners kill rats in their homes, or if the farmers kill the wild rats eating their grains; otherwise, they might have a hygiene problem or catch some disease that the rats carry.

MY girlfriend Nikki and I enjoy taking road trips. After a long week of deadlines and being swamped with work, we sometimes take road trips to sort of disappear from city life. We both love what we do (we’re both architects), but sometimes you really have to take a break and spend uninterrupted quality time with the person you love.
