    Orcollo looking beyond Yang duel

    By Ian Brion
    Reporter

FOR Dennis Orcollo, it will be more than just the accolade of being the money-game king of the world he is focused at when he faces Yang Ching-shun in the Golden Pool Classic presents: “Orcollo vs. Yang, it’s all about the money… and more” from April 20 to 22 tentatively at the Gateway Mall in Cubao, Quezon City.

“I want to use this as a springboard in my quest to become a world champion, which is my ultimate goal this year,” said Orcollo. “I feel like I’m already ripe to be a world champion.”

Orcollo, although lacking in major titles here and abroad, is considered by his peers as the best pool player in the country right now.

And the 28-year-old son of a fisherman from Surigao del Sur knows why.

“It’s all because of the money game that I’m considered the best player here,” he said in Pilipino.

Most of the fancied players in money game are Filipinos. Jose “Amang” Parica and Efren “Bata” Reyes used to be the best in the business and Orcollo himself has high regards to them.

”There are a lot of feared Filipino players when it comes to money games. I’m wary of Ga-Ga (Antonio Gabica), Django (Francisco Bustamante) and Van-Van (Lee Van Corteza),” he said.

Never mind the humility, he has beaten the best of local pool in money game.

It will be a different challenge when he faces Yang in a winner-take-all, race-to-60, 9-ball marathon organized by Bugsy Promotion and Rocketman Enterprises. It offers $10,000 (nearly P.5-million) to the winner.

Yang is acknowledged as the best money game player in Taiwan. He’s rated higher than former world champions Chao Fong-pang and Wu Chia-ching.

”Dennis and Yang are similar in many ways. They’re both without world title but fearsome money game players.” said Rocketman Enterprises head Ramon Tuason.

“There is no sure bet among the two. In a protracted duel the one in better condition should come out on top,” added Bugsy Promotions top honcho Perry Mariano.
