LORRAINE UY homered in the final inning as De La Salle rallied to beat Ateneo, 6-4, yesterday in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 70 softball tournament at the University of Santo Tomas Open Field.

University of the Philippines (UP), behind the two home runs of Amalia Sayuno, defeated University of the East (UE), 6-4, for its third win in as many games, also yesterday.

Uy, 21, sent Kristine Drilon’s pitch to deep left field at the top of the seventh inning, pushing pitcher Joy Lanting—who reached second on a fielding error—for a two-run home run that broke a 4-4 deadlock.

Lanting, who fanned five and yielded four runs and four hits in a complete game, grounded out two batters including the final out in the bottom of the seventh to end the game.

De La Salle improved to 2-1 while Ateneo remained winless in three outings.

    Simpron goals lifts Tams

JOVANIE SIMPRON scored two goals as Far Eastern University (FEU) beat previously undefeated Ateneo, 2-0, yesterday in men’s football action at the Ateneo field.

In yesterday’s other games, UP beat UST, 1-0, while UE pinned De La Salle further, 1-0.

Simpron, a former Rookie of the Year awardee, knocked the first goal in the 42nd minute. He again lofted a shot through in the 56th for the victory.

“He [Simpron] has a lot of skills and speed,” said FEU coach Rodolfo Alicante, whose team won two straight after losing to UP in their second game of the season.

The win tied the Tamaraws with the Blue Eagles with a 3-1 win-loss slate.

Jose Adonis Santos scored in the 22nd minute as the Fighting Maroons stunned the defending champion Tigers, who also lost to the Blue Eagles on Sunday. UP is tied with UST and UE with 2-2, while De La Salle is alone at the bottom with 0-4.

    Lady Falcons in hot streak

ADAMSON recovered from a set down to defeat De La Salle, 23-25, 25-17, 25-20, 25-16, yesterday in women’s volleyball tournament at the Blue Eagle Gym.

The Lady Falcons (8-1) are again tied for the lead with the Tigresses.

Adamson coach Dulce Pante’s confidence has risen, now that her wards have won eight straight after dropping their first game of the season.

Nagpi-peak na ang mga bata. I think sa nilalaro nila, kayang kayang mag-champion,” said Pante.

Risaa Laguilles topscored for the Lady Falcons with 21 markers while teammate Angela Benting had 19 and Michelle Segodine had 15 including an ace to end the game in the fourth.

    Tamaraws are in the hunt

FEU ripped UP, 25-19, 25-23, 27-25, in men’s volleyball, also at the Blue Eagle Gym, with Edjet Mabbayad finishing with a game-high 20 points and Joshua Alcarde 13 for the Tamaraws, who notched their ninth win in 10 outings—good for second place.

De La Salle needed five sets in beating Ateneo, 21-25, 25-22, 22-25, 28-26, 15-10. Last Tuesday, UST kept its record unblemished at 10 by beating Adamson, 25-18, 27-29, 25-17, 25-17.

“We hope to sustain this level of play,” said UST coach Emil Lontoc.

UE defeated National University, 25-17, 24-26, 25-21, 25-20, also yesterday.

UP is running third with 6-4, followed by Adamson (5-5), UP (5-5), Ateneo (2-8), De La Salle (2-8), and NU (1-9).

UP takes on NU Saturday at 8 a.m. at the Blue Eagle Gym followed by UE versus Adamson at 10 a.m., FEU against De La Salle at noon and UST against Ateneo at 2 p.m.
