SONNY BARRIOS yesterday reiterated he has yet to
fully accept his appointment as the seventh commissioner
of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA).
And as
the days drag before he gets to sit down with the PBA
board as well as the league’s executive committee—not to
mention a pending decision from his family in the United
States—Barrios admitted it is not doing the league any
good.
Barrios
felt the issue about the league commissioner has been
drawing a fair share of publicity with the Philippine
Cup that is about to enter its crucial stage.
“The
effect is not positive,” Barrios told the weekly
Philippine Sportswriters Association Forum at the
Shakey’s
United Nations Avenue
yesterday.
“Having
to face the reality, it has been the ‘flavor of the
month’ by our media friends. Instead of talking the
quarterfinal series, gustong malaman din ng tao kung
ano ba ang nangyayari sa isyu ng commissionership,”
he said.
Barrios
said he hopes that before the week ends, he will be able
to sit down with the PBA executive board, led by
chairman Tony Chua, to make clarifications about his
tenure—that is if he accepts the job.
What’s
keeping him from saying yes leans heavily on his
family’s caregiver business in the
US.
He said
that being the officer-in-charge, being a permanent
commissioner of the PBA has never crossed his mind.
“The
board did not even bother to ask me kung paano ako
ang i-appoint na commissioner. Frankly, I was
disappointed when they made that decision,” Barrios
stressed.
Besides
Chua, Barrios said he would like to sit down with the
other members of the executive committee—vice chairman
Joaqui Trillo of Alaska, Robert Non of Barangay Ginebra
and Lito Alvarez of Air21.
“What’s
on the table right now is if I’ll accept a longer
engagement or not? Mahirap din naman kasing iwan
basta-basta ang PBA in this situation,” said
Barrios.
Some
long-term projects of the PBA are now left hanging as
Barrios thought he would turn over those assignments
either to Atty. Chito Salud, his personal choice, or
Lambert Ramos. |
