  • UST ladies also looking for clean round

    By Reuben Terrado
    Correspondent

SANTO TOMAS U (UST) goes for a sweep of the first round in women’s volleyball and the Tigresses meet no less than Far Eastern U in a rematch of last season’s University Athletic Association of the Philippines finals.

Game time is 2 p.m. today at the Blue Eagle Gym at Loyola Heights.

UST coach August Santamaria was not satisfied with the way his team played, accusing the defending champions of being “complacent” in a four-set win against De La Salle on Sunday.

Hindi puwedeng maging ganu’n ang laro namin kapag kinalaban namin ang FEU,” said Santamaria.

The Lady Tamaraws (5-1) need the victory to stay afloat of the Tigresses. A loss and FEU may lose its grip of second place in the standings.

Adamson, which holds a similar 5-1 record, takes on winless University of the East (UE, 0-7) at 8 a.m. also today. The Lady Falcons made mincemeat of University of the Philippines (UP) after a three-set victory in the weekend.

In other matches, National U and De La Salle, which have similar 2-4 win-loss cards, face each other at 10 a.m., while Ateneo (3-3) takes on UP (1-5) at 4 p.m.

In softball, defending four-time champion Adamson gets another shot at securing win No. 1 when the Lady Falcons face the Ateneo Lady Eagles at the UST Open Field. The match is set at 9 a.m.

The Lady Falcons’ quest for their first victory was washed out literally last Saturday after rain forced organizers to postpone the Adamson-De La Salle match. The match, which saw Adamson up 7-2, will be resumed on a later date.

In other games, runner-up UP takes on UST at 11 a.m. followed by De La Salle against UE at 1 p.m.

In women’s football, title-holder FEU debuts against Ateneo today at the Ateneo field.

The match is set at 1 p.m. with the Lady Tamaraws hoping to open its title defense on a good note.

The Lady Eagles are riding high on a moral-boosting 1-0 win against UP last Sunday on opening day. UST takes on UP in the other match at 3 p.m.
