Affairs Secretary Alberto Romulo said the Philippines
will seek greater international support for better
management of remittances that would benefit an
estimated 8 million Filipino migrant workers during
sideline meetings at the World Economic Forum (WEF) to
be held in
Davos,
Switzerland.
Romulo
said the
Philippines
would join a dialogue in the Community of the West and
Islam on Migration and Remittances at the sidelines of
the WEF meeting from January 23 to 27.
The
Philippines is raising issues on protecting migrant
workers during the WEF meeting as one of the top sending
nations of overseas workers, he explained.
“We have
more than 8 million Filipinos overseas who contribute to
the development of our nation and host states. As a
function of international migration, we can gain
valuable insight and greater understanding of
remittances as a development tool,” said Romulo in his
departure statement issued Tuesday.
The
Philippines is hosting the second Global Forum on
Migration and Development in October this year. The
forum is meant to increase global cooperation in
protecting the rights of the migrant workers,
particularly maximizing the use of remittances for
development. At the same time, Romulo is attending the
inaugural Alliance of Civilizations Forum in Madrid,
Spain, on January 15 and 16. The meeting seeks to engage
key government stakeholders on the importance of
interfaith, intercultural and intercivilizational
dialogue as a vital instrument to achieve greater peace,
progress and prosperity.
“Specifically, I will highlight the inroads made by the
Philippines in drawing together our diverse peoples in
greater understanding and respect,” said Romulo.
He said
these accomplishments are results of a continuing
collective effort built on the strength of a committed
civil society and dedicated religious groups that have
worked with the Philippine government. |
