UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas (UST) notched its fifth straight victory after easily beating National University, 25-13, 25-12, 25-12, yesterday in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 70 women’s volleyball tournament at the Blue Eagle Gym.

Ma. Angeli Tabaquero and Venus Bernal had 13 points each in the Tigresses’ win that took only 51 minutes.

No one from National U scored in double figures with Michelle Bautista and Mervic Mangui coming up with just five each. The Lady Bulldogs dropped to a 1-4 card.

Adamson University also quickly dispatched Ateneo, 25-14, 25-13, 25-22, for its fourth straight win.

Rissa Laguilles had a game-high 19 points for the Lady Falcons, who limited league leading scorer Charo Soriano to six points.

Adamson coach Dulce Pante credited the long Christmas break to their first win in the new year. “Nakatulong kasi, naging sabik ang mga bata na maglaro,” she said.

The loss was costly for the Lady Eagles because Bea Pascual injured her left anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and is expected to sit out the rest of the season.

University of the Philippines finally won this season, beating winless University of the East, 20-25, 25-19, 25-16, 16-25, 15-13.

Danielle Castañeda led the Lady Maroons with 20 points while Miah Rose Manukay added 15, including a cross-court winner that broke a 13-all tie in the fifth set.

The Lady Maroons (1-4) looked poise to end the game in the fourth but the Red Skirts amassed five straight points to open the set and force a decider. The Red Skirts are 0-5 in the season.
