Two-time
championship division winner Crystal Shin of South Korea
goes for her third consecutive championship in the 45th
edition of the Southern Ladies Golf Tournament set from
February 6 to 8 at the Bacolod Golf and Country Club in
Binitin, Murcia, Negros Occidental.
Shin won
for the first time two years ago in Del Monte, Bukidnon,
then repeated in Iloilo City last year.
Shin,
however, will have her hands full this time as she goes
up against a field that includes Southeast Asian Games
individual silver medalist Anya Tanpinco, Chihiro Ikeda
and Regina de Guzman.
The
54-hole individual event featuring the country’s top
amateurs will use the Molave scoring system. In the team
competition, a four-to-play, three-to-count format will
be enforced, according to the tournament organizer, the
Bacolod Ladies Golf Association.
Besides
the premier championship division, trophies will also be
up for grabs in Classes A, B, C and D. A separate
seniors tournament will be held on February 6 and 7.
Practice rounds are set on February 4 and 5, when the
Am-Am side event will also be played.
A team
captains’ meeting will be held February 5 at 5 p.m. at
the BGCC, according to the organizing National Golf
Association of the Philippines.
The
event is limited to female amateurs with certified
handicaps or handicap indices. Participants with
multiple memberships will use their lowest handicaps or
indices.

Final-round collapse drops Aunzo to third in Guangdong
Ferdinand Aunzo’s hopes of nailing his first win this
year came crashing down Thursday after scoring a dismal
six-over-par 78 to finish solo third place in the 20th
China Open in Guangdong, China.
Aunzo
held sway in the first three rounds and even gained a
golden opportunity for the overall championship when he
carded an even-par 72 at the penultimate day to stay
within two shots of erstwhile leader Zai Xiong Yan of
South Korea.
However,
all the efforts of the reed-thin Aunzo, one of three
amateurs of the ICTSI contingent, went for naught with
the final-round collapse. He had a four-day aggregate
of 297, four behind the 293 of China’s Hou Wei who won a
two-hole playoff over Yan.
“It was
a sorry wind up for Aunzo. He felt too much pressure
because he became too wary of trying to catch up,” ICTSI
assistant coach Nestor Mendoza told the BusinessMirror.
And for
Aunzo, a member of the silver medal winning team in the
Southeast Asian Games last December, it was an
experience he won’t forget.
“Nasayang
ang pag-asa pero ganun talaga. Minsan nananalo, minsan
natatalo. I let this one slip away. Babawi na
lang ako sa ibang tournaments,” he said via an
overseas call. |
