BSP: US crisis no risk to banks |
|
|
A CENTRAL
bank survey on the extent of exposure of Philippine banks to
Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, central players in the
still-reeling US mortgage market, has been completed, with
happy results: The local banks’ collective exposure is so
minimal that they “do not pose a threat” to the banking
system.
It turns out
that if Philippine banks had very minimal exposure to the
collateralized debt obligations, or CDOs, of banks and
financial institutions in the United States, they have even
more minimal exposure to debt instruments issued by Freddie
Mac and Fannie Mae, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP)
said on Friday. |

Shooting pain for RP’s Ang;
hope pinned on Walsh, Diaz |
|
|
BEIJING—Eric
Ang did not shoot down a medal in the 29th Beijing Olympics.
That was expected.
Ang finished
dead last in a field of 35 in the men’s individual trap
event of shooting. That was not expected.
Ang, the
oldest on Team Philippines at 37, was cold when he started
the first three sets in a hot and humid Saturday, shooting
down 19, 24 and 22 points (each set has a maximum 25
points). It was a rainy and cold Sunday, but the Laoag City
businessman could only do 21 and 20 for a 106 total. |

Test for technology, political
will in ARMM elections |
|
|
COTABATO
CITY—All eyes are on today’s computerized elections in the
Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM), mainly for two
things: it will be the “laboratory” for full automation in
the 2010 general elections; and it is being held in the
shadow of threats of violence as the government’s peace
negotiations with Moro rebels continue to cause more heat
than soothe tension. |

making the global stage by becoming one of the biggest
sponsors of the biggest show on earth—the Olympics.
Basically
young in the market—it acquired IBM’s PC Division in May
2005—Lenovo started going global in the 2006 Torino (Turin,
Italy) Winter Olympics and extended its sponsorship of the
biggest gathering of nations in the 2008 Summer Games here.
Lenovo also is one of the sponsors of Formula One’s Williams

A mansion of many languages |
|
|
In 1977 my
mentor, the National Artist for Literature and Theater
Rolando S. Tinio, said: “It is too simple-minded to suppose
that enthusiasm for Filipino as lingua franca and national
language of the country necessarily involves the elimination
of English usage or training for it in schools. Proficiency
in English provides us with all the advantages that
champions of English say it does—access to the vast fund of
culture expressed in it, mobility in various spheres of the
international scene, especially those dominated by the
English-speaking Americans, participation in a quality of
modern life of which some features may be assimilated by us
with great advantage. Linguistic nationalism does not imply
cultural chauvinism. Nobody wants to go back to the
mountains. The essential Filipino is not the center of an
onion one gets at by peeling off layer after layer of
vegetable skin. One’s experience with onions is quite
telling: peel off everything and you end up with a pinch of
air.” |

Neda gets picky with projects |
|
|
IN hopes of
adopting a stricter policy when securing funding for
projects and streamlining its expenditures, the national
government can now refuse loans or grants for projects that
are not indicated in the Medium Term Philippine Development
Plan (MTPDP), according to the National Economic and
Development Authority (Neda). |
