Government spending to boost GDP

AMID high oil and food prices, government spending will be able to boost the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) and control inflation this year until 2009.

Presidential economic adviser and Albay Gov. Jose Salceda said GDP will likely grow 5.4 percent to 5.5 percent in 2008, and 5.6 percent to 5.8 percent in 2009. The government, however, has a higher projection: 5.7 percent to 6.5 percent this year, and 6.2 percent to 7.0 percent in 2009.

MILF given 24 hours to leave occupied villages

THE government on Thursday gave the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) 24 hours to leave the areas in North Cotabato that it has occupied since late last month, when the rebel group allegedly attacked civilian communities, or else run the risk of facing the full might of the government.

Deep-rooted land disputes sparked raids

DAVAO CITY—Decades-old conflict over land ownership among different powerful Moro clans in the western part of North Cotabato triggered the attacks by the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) on militia outposts in the towns of Aleosan and Midsayap, the Armed Forces said.

Gasoline price rolled back by P1, diesel by P0.50

LOCAL oil companies announced Thursday that they have reduced the price of gasoline by P1 a liter and of diesel and kerosene by P0.50 a liter in a bid to reflect the continuous downtrend in world oil prices.

Independent petroleum companies Eastern Petroleum Corp., Seaoil Philippines Inc. and Unioil initiated the price cut on their respective gasoline products on Thursday noon, and their respective price cut on diesel and kerosene on Friday morning.

DOE orders Pilipinas Shell to submit IPO plans

THE Department of Energy (DOE) said on Thursday it has requested Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corp. (PSPC) to submit its initial public offering (IPO) plans as mandated by the Downstream Oil Industry Deregulation Act of 1998.
